Mr Stan Lai honored a group of CUSYers with his presence at our Roundtable, Friday April 9th. During the meeting Mr. Lai and his spouse Mrs Ding engaged on a wide variety of subjects ranging from education systems and culture developments, to their own university experience in the United States and the love story between themselves. Here is recorded a few key points raised in the discussion.

After the Roundtable, Mr. Lai then kindly joined us at the dinner table in Royal Palace restaurant. Another couple of hours passed in friendly discourse, accompanied by discussions on a even broader range of issues. Overall, I trust all those who attended our event have found it an invaluable experience.

Chinese coal mining disasters don't normally end happily: Last year, more than 2,600 people were killed in pit accidents. So when Wangjialing mine flooded on March 28, trapping 153 workers below the surface, the miners' families and co-workers prepared for the worst.But in what officials and rescuers are calling a miracle, at least 115 workers have been successfully pulled to safety more than a week after they were caught underground. State media broadcast live pictures of the miners being carried out of the mine entrance on stretchers, with towels covering their eyes to protect them from sunlight, which they had not seen for eight days. One clapped on his stretcher and reached out his coal-blackened hands to thank his rescuers.

It is unprecedented for a nation to lose its political and intellectual elite twice, in the same place, 70 years apart. What happens next could act as a litmus test for how far Polish-Russian relations have come.
The passenger list from the Tupolev TU-154 jet, which crashed in western Russia on Saturday killing all 96 people onboard reads like a who's-who of Poland's political elite.
President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria, the Chief of the Polish Armed Forces, the Deputy Foreign Minister, Head of the Polish National Bank, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, along with the president’s chief-of-staff and a swathe of top advisers. ''Today’s world has never seen a tragedy of this kind,'' said a visibly shaken Polish PM Donald Tusk.
What makes this tragedy a catastrophe for Poles is why such a high-ranking delegation was flying to Smolensk in the first place. Their mission was to commemorate the Katyn massacre of spring 1940 when Stalin ordered the execution of 22,000 members of Poland's professional classes in a concerted attempt to stymie a generation of leaders. This was followed by years of Soviet denials until the early '90s when Mikhail Gorbachev admitted the NKVD had been responsible. Yet the issue remained a source of lingering tension, with a ceremony last week attended by Vladimir Putin and Polish PM Donald Tusk marking the first time a Russian leader had invited his Polish counterpart to the site.

7. “Into the Wild: Wildlife photography by Jake Berv '10”
