1."God Save the King: Music from the British Royal Court, 1770-1837"
In 1837, Ernest Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland and fifth son of King George III, became Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover, Germany, moving to Hanover and taking with him part of the royal family’s household music library. In 2007, Beinecke Library acquired this collection, which is closely related to holdings from the same time period in the British Library's Royal Music Library. The collection documents the musical life of a late 18th- and 19th-century household and court in Britain and Germany. It also shows a particular historical moment, in which ideas of monarchy were musically articulated within a royal household with its own unique perspective on what it meant to represent a nation. This exhibition examines ideas of patriotism, nationalism, and musicality within the Hanover royal music library. On view Oct. 1-Dec. 11.

A DELICATE BALANCE
Directed by James Bundy
October 22 to November 13
Edward Albee, the three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Three Tall Women, makes his Yale Rep debut with a new production of his masterpiece, A Delicate Balance.
Friday night in the suburbs. Agnes and Tobias are a well-off, long-married couple who share their home with Agnes's older sister, Claire, a self-proclaimed “drunk.” The delicate balance of their lives has already begun to teeter when their best friends arrive unexpectedly, asking if they can stay—indefinitely. The next day, their grown daughter shows up, expecting to move home again after the collapse of her fourth marriage. Agnes and Tobias soon realize they must make some difficult choices about what to do next.
Artistic Director James Bundy (2009’s Death of a Salesman) stages this social comedy about the fragile nature of marriages, families, and friendships.

Special Introduction and Audience Q&A with Director Du Haibin
The “Great Sichuan Earthquake” took place at 14:28 on May 12, 2008. 10 days after: Scenes not seen on official TV, “survival” is the keyword. Ordinary people are salvaging destroyed pig farms in the mountains, recuperating cents-worth scrapped metals, or pillaging victims’ homes. Behind the highly-mediatized official visits, inconsolable grief of families searching for loved ones. 210 days after: Harsh winter, villagers preparing for Lunar New Year, a vagabond and his family are detailing grievances about the ill-handling of rebuilding schemes and relief funds. Gearing up for a high official’s visit, a thorough clean-up of the villages and tent-resettlement for refugees comes through. The promise made for all to live in houses in winter seems tough to keep. Fake components in the community transformer cause an electricity blackout for New Year’s Eve reunion dinners. New Year Day starts as never-ending parade of tourists buying DVDs of the most horrific scenes, souvenir albums of corpses being pulled out of the ruins, and photo shooting in front of Beichuan, the town most severely hit, where
